Life is always better with an interesting career...
Ever since college I have had a hard time finding my way in the world of business. When I finally got started I found myself in the residential home construction and development industry. I thought it was interesting, rewarding and profitable. Then came the financial crash and that industry was decimated. Owners of companies had personally guaranteed loans so they were dropping like flies.
When I began the search again I wanted to stay in an industry that produced something. Some tangible, physical product and hopefully one that was needed and not junk. I was approached by a recruiter for a job working for a large, international civil engineering firm, who's client was a huge electric utility company in the midwest and east. Jumping on the chance, I became a Cost Engineer for the team. I manage multiple multimillion dollar construction projects in the transmission department. That's the department responsible for getting the power from the generation plants to substations which convert that voltage to one that is easier for grids to handle and to send to customers.
After two months, the job is going great. Lots of work, but interesting and challenging. I did manage to get to the field; went to a project where we are installing two new 765kV transformers. Pretty impressive pieces of machinery. 22000 gallons of oil, 3 million dollars each...not bad. And I now own Fire Retardant clothing!
Cheers to 2011 being a good year!
