This Week In The Garden

Our garden is still growing!  The zuchinni plant and the cucumbers are attempting a Napolean-like take over of the backyard.  The poor little red bell pepper is the weakest link... I blame the too small pot.  Thus far we have eaten our way through the romaine (that section is now the overflow for the zuchinni), devoured copious amounts of basil and increasing amounts of flat-leaf parsley, added the homegrown strawberries to smoothies, and just this week we ate the first cucumber.

The peas were planted way too late but they are troopers.  There are about a million little baby cucumbers out there that are just dying to be made into pickles and added to our salads.  Both the jalapeno peppers and tomatoes are steadily growing and adding new ones to ensure that there will be more than a one time bang.

We had a scare after our camping trip that the basil and peppers were goners but they sprung back like champs... We are hoping that all continues to grow nicely so that late July and August will be filled with garden veggies.  But if all else fails - at least we have a ton of pesto frozen!

And I think that the word garden has been added to the dogs' vocabulary.  Mention the word garden and the run to the back door, proceed to open that door and they run as fast as their little legs will go out to the garden door - it is pretty cute.

I spy...

Our little garden is growing like crazy.  Almost every day when we get home from work there is some kind of development.  There is a little game of I spy going on...

We now have ripening strawberries, baby jalapeno peppers (like 10 of them- seriously), baby red bell peppers, baby tomatoes, baby radishes, and squash and cucumber blossoms... we just might have a bumper crop out of this mini-garden!

Having the garden has also made the backyard a bit more enjoyable to hang out in... the dogs just love it.

The Garden is Growing!

Our little urban garden is growing more and more every day.  Somedays we come home from work and you can immediately tell the development for the day... either a new set of seeds have popped up or a flower has emerged or they just look taller.  Even our landlord commented on how fast everything is growing.

I was not the most particular gardener as I just scattered the seeds :) so you won't find rows but there are very healthy looking veggie plants.  We have added one sprinkling of coffee grounds for fertilizer/nitrogen a few weeks ago and will add another one soon.

Thus far, this has been a very fun project for us.  The dogs love it as it means that they get to spend afternoons hanging out in the backyard.  And I have a new appreciation for rainy days as since we don't have a hose hookup watering is not the most convenient.  Hopefully we end up with a bit of produce after all of the work of building and planting.

The afternoon we built a garden...

18 pieces of free scrap wood. 54 screws. 2 trips to Home Depot. 5 bags of dirt + 1 bag of spagnum peat moss + 2 bags of container soil.  16 baby plants.  2 pieces of lattice. 1 shovel. Lots of seeds.

We are pretty excited about this little garden.  It is quite the step up from our herb container garden last year.  Hopeful our garden grows well as we have lots of plans for all the produce!
